USN Honorable Discharge Reserve Pin. The United States Navy Reserve Honorable Discharge button or pin (pins for women) is awarded to personnel who meet the requirements to receive an Honorable Discharge Certificate (DD 256N).
Precisely how long one must serve in the Navy Reserve in order to qualify for the DD 256N can vary widely based on several factors related to their service. For example, an officer who was commissioned in a health professional specialty for which there was a shortage of personnel may have an obligated service period of just two years. The specific guidelines are spelled out in Article 137 of the Universal Code of Military Justice and in U.S. Code Title 10, Section 651.
Honorable Discharge buttons and pins are authorized for wear civilian clothes, but they may also be worn by those who have received an Honorable Discharge but subsequently chosen to re-enlisted and are currently on active duty.
